When a missing preceptor pushes your WilmU graduation back
Wilmington University's practicums run in sequence, so a term without a preceptor can move every course after it. Three things limit the damage: withdrawing by the deadline instead of missing it, staying well inside WilmU's five-year limits, and lining up preceptors for every remaining practicum before the next term opens.

How one lost term moves the finish line
Each WilmU NP track is a chain. GRN 7121 Family Practicum I comes after the advanced health assessment and differential diagnosis courses, and Practicums II, III and IV follow in order. In the PMHNP track, each of the first three practicums shares a semester with a didactic partner (GRN 7203, then GRN 7204, then GRN 7205), so a practicum that slips can take its partner course with it.
The DNP has its own rhythm. Leadership students move through the four experiential engagement courses singly, each lasting a full 15-week semester, and WilmU requires continuous enrollment across the three project courses that follow. BSN to DNP students complete the NP practicums before the DNP core and project, so a delay early on travels all the way to the end.

Withdraw on time: W, FA and the appeal
If a practicum cannot go ahead this term, the withdrawal deadline is the most important date on your calendar. A W before it has no effect on your GPA; miss it and the grade becomes an FA, which lowers your GPA. You withdraw from online courses in MyWilmU, and modular courses keep their own deadlines.

The Summer 2027 semester's withdrawal date is not listed on the registrar's term page, so check it before you rely on it.
A late-withdrawal appeal exists, but it is narrow. The accepted grounds are a serious illness or injury, the loss of an immediate family member, primary caregiving duties, military orders and a change in your work schedule. You file a withdrawal form with a letter and documentation, the appeal only works when you leave every course that term, and a committee that sits twice a month issues a final ruling. A lost placement is not among those reasons, which is why the regular deadline matters so much.
The five-year limits and the one-year gap
Three WilmU programs carry a five-year completion limit: the MSN-FNP, MSN Leadership and the DNP (where the undated DNP packet says seven; see the FAQ below). The MSN-FNP adds a rule that bites after a delay: anyone away from study for longer than a year repeats selected courses. One lost term rarely threatens five years, but stacked delays and a long break can.
WilmU's graduate catalog contains no leave-of-absence policy. If you expect time away, ask your program chair how the break will be recorded before you step out, and keep the answer in writing, along with the date you plan to return.
Time away is where a delay turns costly: a gap of over a year in the MSN-FNP sends you back to repeat selected courses.
GPA, repeats and standing if a grade slips
A delay handled with a W leaves your record clean. A delay that ends in an FA or an F brings in WilmU's academic standing rules. A cumulative graduate GPA below 3.0 means probation, and WilmU's Academic Review Committee looks at standing at the close of every block, roughly every eight weeks. Probation caps your load at 9 credits a semester, enrolling on continued probation takes the Program Chair's sign-off, and a third occurrence can bring suspension.
Suspension starts the next block. After sitting out one full semester, a suspended student can ask the college dean, in writing, to be reinstated on probation. Repeats have limits too: the university allows up to four attempts at a course, while every DNP course requires at least a B, allows a single retake, and no DNP student may repeat more than two courses. - Check your enrollment statusWilmU counts 18 credits over one year as full time for MSN and DNP students. If a delay drops you below that, ask the Financial Aid office what it changes for you.
- Keep credentialing currentClinical credentialing clearance must be complete and up to date before clinical courses, so ask whether a later start means renewing any part of it.
- Line up every remaining preceptorBook the preceptor for the next practicum and the ones after it now, working back from each site's lead time; TidalHealth, for one, asks for 90 days.
- Keep your RN license in stepThe license must be active for the state where each clinical happens, before and throughout your clinical courses; see the RN license page.
FNP and PMHNP cohorts start in Fall and Spring, and the DNP starts in Spring, Summer and Fall, so ask where your sequence rejoins the schedule.

Questions WilmU students ask
Can I pause my WilmU NP program while I look for a preceptor?
WilmU's graduate catalog publishes no leave-of-absence policy, so a pause is something to arrange with your program rather than assume. Talk to your program chair before the withdrawal deadline, get the plan in writing, and keep any break under a year if you are in the MSN-FNP, where a longer gap brings course repeats.
Is the WilmU DNP time limit five years or seven?
Five, according to the current DNP curriculum page. The DNP application packet, which carries no date, gives seven years in its FAQ yet also mentions a five-year policy. Plan around five, since the curriculum page is the current statement, and put the question to the DNP Program Chair for your own start term.
Will a later graduation affect my Delaware APRN license?
Delaware wants a new graduate's APRN application filed in DELPROS no later than two years after graduation, so that clock starts on your actual graduation date. A later finish moves the window rather than shrinking it. The rest of the path stays the same: national certification in your population focus, the license, then a Delaware CSR and DEA registration before prescribing controlled substances.
Does an FA on a practicum hurt more than a W?
Yes. A W taken before WilmU's withdrawal deadline carries no GPA effect, while an FA, the grade for missing that deadline, counts as a failure and lowers your GPA. For MSN-FNP students, who must hold a 3.0 throughout, and DNP students, who need a B in every DNP course, one FA can set off probation or a required repeat.
Which cohort do I rejoin after a delay?
WilmU does not publish how a delayed student rejoins the practicum sequence. Because FNP and PMHNP cohorts start in Fall and Spring, ask the Assistant Chair for your track which section of your next practicum you will join, whether your paired didactic course moves with it, and what the new plan looks like in Degree Works.
