Wilmington University's FNP Graduate Certificate for master's and doctorally prepared nurses
WilmU's Family Nurse Practitioner Graduate Certificate lets nurses with a completed master's or doctoral degree add the FNP role online. It carries 27 FNP credits and the same four Family Practicums as the MSN-FNP, 750 clinical hours in all, after a GAP analysis of your earlier coursework. Who the certificate serves
WilmU writes this certificate for nurses who have already completed graduate study: its audience is master's or doctorally prepared nurses. Admission looks for a BSN and an MSN or DNP, each with a 3.0 GPA, plus a health assessment course, an unencumbered RN license and an interview, reviewed in two stages. The deadlines are May 1 for a Fall start and October 1 for Spring.
That wording covers a range of backgrounds. Your master's might be in leadership, in education or in another nurse practitioner focus; in each case the GAP analysis below is what sets your starting point. The finished certificate readies you for the FNP board exam from ANCC or AANPCB, and WilmU's CCNE accreditation extends to its post-graduate APRN certificates.
The GAP analysis and what it reviews
Before your plan is fixed, WilmU compares your earlier graduate work against a prerequisite block of four courses, labeled 15 credits on the certificate page. The certificate's prerequisites in roles, pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment call for a B or higher, so an older course with a lower grade may not carry over. The certificate page is inconsistent on timing. One line lets missing GAP courses be finished while you are in the program; another treats them as prerequisites done before enrollment. Because Family Practicum I cannot open until GRN 7101, GRN 7103 and GRN 7104 are behind you, the answer decides when your clinical hours begin, so get the FNP Assistant Chair to confirm it for your plan.

The same four practicums as the master's track
Certificate students complete GRN 7121 through GRN 7124, the identical Family Practicum sequence master's students take: 175 hours apiece for Practicums I to III and 225 for Practicum IV. WilmU's certificate page places the 750 hours in various clinical settings, planned simulation counts inside the FNP total, and NP students fall under the University's group professional liability coverage.

What differs for you is pace. With the master's core already behind you, the stretch between admission and GRN 7121 is likely to be shorter than it is for MSN-FNP students, so preceptor planning belongs at the very start of the certificate rather than halfway through.
When you already work in health care
As RNs with graduate degrees, certificate students often hold established clinical jobs, and some already practice as APRNs in another focus. Planning hours with a colleague or at your own workplace can look like the obvious move. WilmU's public pages do not publish rules on employer, supervisor or relative preceptors, so raise the idea with the FNP Assistant Chair before you build a plan around one.
For Delaware APRN programs, the Board of Nursing looks for a physician, pharmacist, PA or APRN license that is active, unencumbered and comparable in practice focus, held by someone licensed where the teaching happens. For the family role, comparable focus usually means a clinician whose panel spans children through older adults. A superb adult-gerontology or psychiatric colleague can still be a weak match for a family practicum.

How the licensure table lists the certificate
WilmU's State Licensures by Program table carries a row named Post Master's-Family Nurse Practitioner (PM-FNP). Most states and DC read Meets Educational Licensing Requirements. New York, North Dakota, Idaho, New Hampshire, Wyoming and Louisiana read Not Determined Yet, and Tennessee's entry uses the variant wording Not Yet Determined.
The row's note frames PM-FNP as a path for BSN-prepared nurses that ends with both an MSN and the certificate, which does not match the certificate page's audience of master's or doctorally prepared nurses. If you live in, or plan to be licensed in, one of the undetermined states, raise both points with WilmU's Online Learning office, the team for state authorization questions. Adding a DNP later
WilmU pairs the FNP certificate with its DNP in a combined option: 75 credits with 750 FNP hours and 500 DNP hours. The page's stated parts, 39 FNP credits and 33 DNP credits, add up to 72 rather than 75, so ask how your own plan totals. Each program needs its own application, and advising for combined students is shared between the NP Program Chair and the DNP program's director.
If a doctorate is on your horizon, deciding before you apply changes how you think about preceptors: the DNP stage calls for a doctorally prepared experiential engagement preceptor, a different profile from your family practice clinicians. Another route is sequential: finish the certificate, earn FNP board certification, then apply to the DNP's Advanced Practice concentration, which admits master's-prepared nurses who hold current national APRN board certification. Questions WilmU students ask
Can a PMHNP or AGNP add the FNP through WilmU's certificate?
The certificate is open to master's or doctorally prepared nurses, so an APRN in another focus fits its stated audience. What changes is your plan: the GAP analysis reviews GRN 7101 to GRN 7104, and coursework you already hold with a B or higher may count. The four Family Practicums and their 750 hours still apply in full, and the FNP Assistant Chair confirms your exact plan.
How many credits is WilmU's post-master's FNP certificate?
WilmU lists 27 FNP credits with 750 clinical hours. If the GAP analysis finds missing prerequisite coursework, the 15-credit block of GRN 7101 through GRN 7104 is added on top. Inside the combined certificate and DNP option, the FNP portion is described as 39 credits, so compare the two pages when you map your plan.
Is the FNP Graduate Certificate online?
Yes. WilmU delivers the certificate online, with cohorts starting twice a year. The MSN-FNP overview refers to twice-yearly in-person seminars for students in practicum. Since certificate students take those same practicum courses, ask the NP Program Chair whether the seminars apply to your cohort and where they take place.
Does the certificate lead to Delaware APRN licensure?
Delaware licenses graduates of accredited graduate or post-graduate APRN programs that include three separate core courses, pharmacology, health assessment and advanced pathophysiology, plus the role and population focus. After national certification, you file the APRN application in DELPROS no later than two years after finishing, and full practice authority comes with the license itself.
What if my RN license is from another state?
For clinicals, WilmU calls for an RN license in the state that hosts the clinical experience. Delaware's Board recognizes a compact state's multistate RN license for practice in Delaware; otherwise, plan on a license in each state where you will train. The Board also expects every preceptor to be licensed in the state where they teach you.
