Wilmington University's PMHNP Graduate Certificate: prerequisites, paired courses and 750 hours
WilmU offers the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner role through a Graduate Certificate rather than an MSN. The certificate builds to four Psychiatric Mental Health Practicums, 750 clinical hours in all, and the first three each run beside a matching didactic course. This guide explains the prerequisites, the pairing, the credit discrepancy and the kind of preceptor each practicum calls for.

PMHNP at WilmU: a certificate, not an MSN
The College of Nursing and Health Sciences lists no MSN in psychiatric mental health. The PMHNP role comes through two doors instead: this Graduate Certificate, and the BSN to DNP PMHNP track for nurses who start from a bachelor's.
The certificate is delivered online with Fall and Spring starts, and applications are due May 1 or October 1. Applicants hold a BSN and an MSN or DNP plus an unencumbered RN license, and the PMHNP Program Admissions Committee reviews them in two stages that include an interview. Completing the certificate prepares you for PMHNP certification through ANCC or AANPCB.
One number needs checking early. The certificate page and the 2026-27 catalog put the program at 31 credits, while the combined PMHNP certificate and DNP page lists the certificate portion as 27. The PMHNP Assistant Chair can tell you which figure governs your plan.
Four prerequisites, each with a B
The PMHNP certificate page is direct about order: GRN 7101 to GRN 7104 come first, each passed at B level or above before enrollment. Of the four, GRN 7104, advanced health assessment taught in a lab, is the one closest in style to the practicums ahead.
The block carries a labeling puzzle of its own. The PMHNP certificate calls it 12 credits, the catalog lists the four courses at 4, 3, 4 and 4 credits, and the FNP certificate labels the same block 15. The credit label matters less than the grade rule: an older pharmacology or assessment course finished with a C may have to be retaken, and that can push GRN 7221 later than you planned. The same four courses matter again at licensure: Delaware's Board looks for separate graduate courses in advanced pathophysiology, health assessment and pharmacology in every APRN program.
Check every prerequisite grade on your transcript against the B rule before you plan a start term.
How each practicum pairs with a didactic course
The PMHNP sequence is built in pairs. After GRN 7201 and GRN 7202, each of the first three practicums shares a term with one of the later didactic courses, so the content you study that term is the content you practice with your preceptor.

Each didactic course in the 7200 series is worth 3 credits and each practicum is worth 4. Practicum format, block or semester, is not published, and it changes a weekly hour load considerably, so confirm it before you offer a preceptor a schedule. The preceptor a psychiatric practicum calls for
WilmU's public pages do not list PMHNP preceptor credentials. For a Delaware program, the Board of Nursing's APRN rule serves as the benchmark: the preceptor holds a pharmacist, physician, APRN or PA license, active and unencumbered, with a practice focus close enough to count as comparable. Faculty approve each preceptor and keep the evaluation role.
In psychiatric mental health, comparable focus points first to PMHNPs and psychiatrists. A PA or pharmacist whose practice centers on psychiatric care can also fit the Board's wording, subject to faculty approval. Settings vary widely: outpatient psychiatry, community mental health, inpatient units and behavioral health teams inside primary care.
The pool is smaller than for family practice. Delaware's state license roster shows 1,034 active Psych/Mental Health NP licenses against 3,147 Family NP licenses (license records, not unique people). Since WilmU describes the 750 hours as taking place in various clinical settings, a mix across the four practicums usually serves you well. Before GRN 7221 begins
Clinical readiness for the PMHNP certificate follows the College's graduate rules. Plan for each of these before Practicum I opens:
- Clinical credentialing clearance, which includes the College background check and drug screen, handled in the designated credentialing system on the handbook's timeline. The background check and drug screen guide covers each step.
- Current CPR (cardiopulmonary) certification.
- RN licensure in the state where your clinical hours take place.
- Any site-level onboarding. Beebe Healthcare's student page, for instance, asks NP students to finish onboarding in Clinician Nexus, with a fit test, vaccines, drug testing, a background check and a check of Delaware's Adult and Child Protection Registry.
WilmU's public pages do not list an immunization set for graduate students, so ask your course faculty which records your sites are likely to request.
Where the licensure table places PM-PMHNP
WilmU's State Licensures by Program table shows the Post Master's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner row (PM-PMHNP) as meeting educational licensing requirements in most states. Seven entries read Not Determined Yet: North Dakota, Idaho, Tennessee, New York, Wyoming, Louisiana and New Hampshire. That status concerns licensure after graduation; where your clinicals happen is governed by the RN license rule.
The row's note aims PM-PMHNP at nurses whose master's degree is already in a nurse practitioner role. Meanwhile, the combined certificate-plus-DNP page sets a different credit total for non-APRNs, 72 rather than 60. Questions WilmU students ask
Does WilmU offer an MSN in psychiatric mental health?
No MSN PMHNP appears on the College of Nursing and Health Sciences program list. The PMHNP role is offered through the Graduate Certificate, for nurses holding an MSN or DNP already, and through the BSN to DNP PMHNP track, which takes a BSN-prepared nurse through the same four psychiatric practicums and on to the DNP project.
How many credits is the WilmU PMHNP certificate?
Thirty-one, according to the certificate page and the 2026-27 catalog, though the combined certificate and DNP page says 27. Any prerequisite courses you still need sit outside that count. Because the figures disagree, have the PMHNP Assistant Chair confirm your total before you budget time or tuition.
Can I start the PMHNP certificate with a prerequisite still missing?
The certificate page treats the four 7100-level prerequisites as finished, each with a B or higher, before enrollment. If your transcript lacks one, or shows a lower grade, plan to complete it first. The PMHNP Program Admissions Committee can explain how earlier coursework from another school will be reviewed.
Which PMHNP practicum is the longest?
GRN 7224, Practicum IV, requires 225 hours, while the first three require 175 each. It is also the only one of the four without a paired didactic course in the catalog, so that term's weight sits on clinical time. Plan your work schedule for those extra 50 hours well ahead.
Can a psychiatrist precept a WilmU PMHNP student?
The Delaware Board of Nursing's rule for APRN programs counts physicians among the license types a preceptor may hold, provided the license is active and unencumbered and the practice focus is comparable, so a psychiatrist fits. WilmU's pages add no list of their own, and faculty approve every preceptor, so confirm any candidate with your course faculty early.
