How to run a preceptor search for a Wilmington University NP course

Write down the four facts a clinician will ask for

Clinicians decide quickly, and they decide on specifics. Before the first message goes out, gather the details below from the graduate catalog, your course plan and the registrar's calendar, so every conversation starts from the same facts.

• The course. The GRN number and title, for example GRN 7122 Family Practicum II or GRN 7222 Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum II.
• The hours. 175 hours per course for practicums one to three on both NP tracks, then 225 for the last one.
• The focus. Lifespan family care for FNP courses; psychiatric mental health care for PMHNP courses.
• The dates. Fall 2026 classes meet from August 31 to December 13, and Spring 2027 classes from January 11 to May 2. WilmU's pages leave open whether NP practicum courses follow the 15-week semester or a 7-week block, so confirm the format with course faculty before quoting weeks to anyone.

Add the state of your RN license and the towns you can reach on clinic days. Those two details decide which candidates are even possible, long before anyone reads a resume.

Check the site's intake before the clinician says yes

A willing clinician is half the answer. Many health systems clear students through their own intake, and some set conditions before a student may even ask. ChristianaCare wants graduate students to check that their school has a current affiliation agreement before they get in touch, Beebe Healthcare runs vaccine, fit-test, drug, background and registry checks through Clinician Nexus, and TidalHealth takes a request form at least 90 days ahead and locates the provider itself.

Smaller practices publish less about their process, but WilmU's credentialing policy still refers to contractual agreements with clinical facilities, so ask early whether a site will need one. How to approach a clinician

1. Lead with the courseOpen with the GRN number, the hours and the term dates. A clinician weighing a request wants the size of the commitment before anything else.
2. Describe the role in the Board's termsUnder Delaware's APRN program rules, a preceptor teaches, supervises and assesses you day to day; evaluation stays a faculty responsibility, and faculty need not be on site. The preceptor also gets an orientation to WilmU's curriculum and the objectives of the course.
3. Show you are readySay where you stand on clinical credentialing clearance and CPR, name your RN license state, and mention the University's group professional liability coverage for NP students.
4. Ask about the site's own stepsFind out whether the practice or health system runs a student intake, who handles it there, and how long it usually takes.
5. Follow up once, then keep movingA short, specific follow-up a few days later is reasonable. If the answer is still open, carry on with the next name on your list rather than waiting.
