Four practicums, 750 hours

The catalog sets the hours course by course and calls them direct care clinical hours. The same four courses serve three WilmU routes: the MSN-FNP at 55 credits, the post-master's FNP Graduate Certificate at 27 credits once a GAP analysis is done, and the BSN to DNP FNP track at 75 credits.

WilmU counts planned simulation experiences inside the FNP clinical hours without saying how many. Older catalogs set lower totals, 600 hours for 2021-22 and then 700 for 2024-25; the 750-hour guide walks through the change, and Family Practicum I covers the first course in detail.

What a family focus means for the match

WilmU does not publish a patient mix for each practicum, but its course titles show the frame. GRN 7104 is Advanced Health Assessment Across the Lifespan, and GRN 7105 applies differential diagnosis and clinical decision making to that same lifespan. Graduates prepare for Family Nurse Practitioner certification through ANCC or AANPCB.

So the preceptors we look for see children, adults and older adults within one practice, in family medicine, primary care or community health settings. Whether a given practicum should lean toward one age group, and whether a specialty clinician may cover part of the hours, is set by course faculty and the syllabus. Ask before you build a plan around a pediatric or women's health rotation, not after the preceptor has agreed.

A family panel also makes the later courses easier to fill. A clinician who sees every age may be able to stay with you from GRN 7121 through the longer GRN 7124, if the program allows one preceptor across several courses.

Delaware's comparable-focus rule for FNP tracks

Delaware's nursing board describes APRN program preceptors by license and by focus. An APRN, physician, PA or pharmacist qualifies when that license is active and unencumbered and the clinician's practice is comparable to the student's. The rule names no specialties, so deciding what is comparable to family practice rests with faculty, who approve preceptors under the same rules.

Two further Board points apply to a family search. Your preceptor's license has to be at or above the level you are training for and valid where you are precepted, and the Board sets a floor of 750 supervised clinical hours per APRN track, which WilmU's FNP total reaches exactly. Your half of the license question is WilmU's own RN licensure condition, covered on the RN license page.

Supply exists in Delaware. On the state's open-data license roster, refreshed September 26, 2026, 3,147 active licenses carry the Family NP focus, more than any other population focus. Those are license records rather than a head count, and holding a license is not the same as having room to teach.

What the preceptor does, and what faculty keep

Under the Board's rules, preceptors in APRN programs strengthen learning that faculty direct; they do not replace it. The preceptor supervises, teaches and gives day-to-day evaluation, faculty hold responsibility for the evaluation itself, and faculty need not be present in the clinic. Every preceptor also gets an orientation to WilmU's curriculum and course objectives.

That orientation repeats across four courses. If the same clinician stays with you from one family practicum to the next, each new course brings its own objectives to review, and GRN 7124 asks for 50 more hours than the three before it. Tell a returning preceptor about both changes early.

Seminars, fees and other FNP details to plan around

According to the MSN-FNP overview, those in FNP practicums attend a pair of face-to-face seminars annually, yet the same page's format line says Online only and gives no place for them. Leave room in your clinic schedule for those dates once faculty confirm them; simulation and seminars covers the conflict.

Some FNP courses carry an associated fee, and WilmU does not say which ones or what the fee covers. Background check and drug screen fees for clearance also fall to the student. Placement costs lists every cost WilmU mentions, without figures.

BSN to DNP FNP students follow the four practicums with the DNP Project courses, where WilmU's DNP pages call for a doctorally prepared preceptor. That is a different search from the family one, so it helps to start it before GRN 7124 ends.

Questions WilmU students ask

What is the hour total for WilmU's family practicums?

750 in all. The first three family practicums carry 175 direct care hours apiece and GRN 7124 carries 225, and WilmU says planned simulation experiences count inside the FNP hours. Catalogs from 2021-22 and 2024-25 showed lower totals, so check which catalog year governs your own plan.

Do FNP Graduate Certificate students take the same practicums?

Yes. The FNP Graduate Certificate uses the same four courses and hours as the MSN-FNP. Before them, a GAP analysis reviews your earlier coursework against GRN 7101 through GRN 7104. WilmU's certificate page describes missing courses both as work done during the program and as a prerequisite, so confirm your plan with the FNP program's Assistant Chair.

Can a pediatric or women's health NP precept part of WilmU's FNP hours?

Delaware's rule asks for a comparable practice focus and leaves that judgment to faculty. WilmU's pages do not say whether specialty preceptors may cover some family hours, so put the question to course faculty or the FNP program's Assistant Chair before you arrange a specialty rotation with anyone.

Does one preceptor have to cover all four FNP practicums?

WilmU's public pages are silent on whether one preceptor may carry you through several practicums or whether you should change settings between them. Ask the FNP program's Assistant Chair early, because the answer decides how many preceptors your search needs and when each one has to be confirmed.

Can I complete an FNP practicum outside Delaware?

WilmU ties NP clinicals to an RN license valid in the clinical's state, and its definition of online learning reaches field experiences beyond Delaware.
