What shapes the cost of your WilmU preceptor search
Every quote we give a Wilmington University student is individual, because a family practice search for GRN 7121 near New Castle is different work from finding a doctorally prepared DNP preceptor in a rural county three states away. Your course, specialty, location, number of practicums and time before the start date set the quote. Here is how each one moves it, and what WilmU's own costs look like alongside.

How a quote is built
A quote starts with the form. Once we know your WilmU program, the course, your home city, where you hold RN licensure, and your start term, we look at how many clinicians near you fit that course and how much groundwork the likely sites carry. You see the quote in writing before the search begins.
Every quote covers the same core work: mapping the course's hours and focus, outreach to clinicians, confirming interest and schedule, laying out the site's intake steps, and a complete preceptor file for your course faculty. It also covers our on-call support through the practicum. What changes from one student to the next is how hard each of those steps is.
The five things that move a quote
- The course and its specialty: family practice across the lifespan in the four Family Practicums, psychiatric mental health practice in
GRN 7221throughGRN 7224, a doctorally prepared preceptor for the DNP, or a clinical teaching mentor forMSN 7752. - How many courses you want covered: one practicum, or every practicum left in your plan.
- Where you live: the number of qualified clinicians within a reasonable drive, and the licensing picture in your state.
- How much time is left: a search that starts a full semester out has room that a search two weeks from the start date does not.
- The site's own intake: a private practice may need little beyond the preceptor's agreement, while a health system can add its own onboarding platform, screening and orientation.
Hours matter too, mostly through scheduling. Family Practicum IV carries 225 hours against 175 for each earlier practicum, so the preceptor's weekly availability matters more in the last course.
Why specialty changes the work
The size of the pool is the biggest single factor. Delaware's open-data license roster counts 1,034 active Psych/Mental Health NP licenses against 3,147 Family NP licenses as of its late-September 2026 update. Those are license records rather than unique people, and not every holder precepts, but the gap is real: in that roster, psychiatric mental health licenses number roughly a third of the family ones.
DNP searches narrow further. WilmU asks for a doctorally prepared preceptor in both DNP concentrations, which leaves out clinicians whose highest degree is a master's. For NP practicums at Delaware sites, the Board's preceptor rule reaches beyond nurse practitioners to PAs, pharmacists and physicians whose practice focus is comparable. WilmU's public pages are silent on whether physicians or PAs may precept its students, so faculty approval settles that question.
A narrower specialty needs more lead time, not just more effort. Starting early is the single best way to keep a psychiatric or DNP search on schedule.
Location and timing
Where you live shapes both the pool and the travel. A student in New Castle County, with Wilmington, Newark and the surrounding suburbs close by, has a different set of options from a student in western Sussex County or a small town in another state. Your RN license also limits the map, because WilmU's clinical rule follows your RN license.
Time is the other lever. With months of runway, we can approach clinicians in order of fit and wait for the right answer. With weeks, we work many conversations at once and move faster on intake. WilmU's fall, spring and summer semesters for 2026-27 start August 31, January 11 and May 10, and the closer your request sits to one of those dates, the more concentrated the work becomes. Intake steps at the site
Health systems carry their own onboarding, and it is part of the work we map. Beebe Healthcare's page, for example, has NP students finish Clinician Nexus onboarding before a rotation, with screening, a fit test, vaccines and a check of Delaware's Adult and Child Protection Registry. ChristianaCare and Bayhealth name Clinician Nexus on their own pages as well.
A private practice or community clinic often carries lighter intake. That does not make it a better or worse choice for your course; it changes how much groundwork sits between a preceptor's yes and your first day. WilmU's own costs, kept separate
Some costs come from WilmU and stay between you and WilmU. The College's background check and drug screen fees are paid by the student, the RN to BSN's NUR 303 credentialing carries a one-time outside vendor fee, and certain FNP courses come with an associated fee that WilmU leaves unnamed. Travel to your clinical site is yours as well. None of these is part of our quote, and our placement costs guide lists them in one place.
One item sits on WilmU's side of the ledger rather than yours: per the MSN-FNP curriculum page, WilmU holds a group professional liability policy covering its NP students. If you want to know whether any part of it reaches your bill, the NP Program Chair or the Financial Aid office can say.
Getting your quote
Send the form below with your program, course, city and start term. If you already have a clinician in mind, say so: vetting a lead you found is lighter work than a search from scratch, and the quote reflects that. Add anything that narrows the search, such as a work schedule that leaves only certain days open or a county you would rather not drive to.
We answer with a written quote and a plain description of what the search involves for your course. If your plan covers more than one practicum, we can quote the next course or all of them, whichever suits your budget and schedule. The steps that follow are laid out on how it works.

Why is every WilmU quote individual?
Because the work differs so much. A family practice search in a busy metro area, a psychiatric mental health search in a rural county and a doctorally prepared DNP search each draw on a different pool, with different intake steps. One flat number would overcharge some students and underserve others.
Are WilmU's credentialing fees part of your quote?
No. The background check and drug screen fees, the NUR 303 vendor fee and any associated FNP course fee are WilmU's and are paid under WilmU's own process. Our quote covers our search, outreach, intake mapping, preceptor file and on-call support.
Does it cost more to cover all four practicums at once?
A quote for several courses covers more work than a quote for one, but planning them together can make each search easier, especially if one preceptor can take you across more than one course. Ask for both options and compare them against your WilmU course plan in MyWilmU Degree Works.
Does a late start change the quote?
It can. A short runway means more outreach running in parallel and faster intake work, and that effort shows in the quote. The earlier you contact us relative to your WilmU start date, the more room there is to work in order of fit.
What if I already found a possible preceptor?
Tell us who it is. We check that the clinician fits the course's focus and Delaware's comparable-focus rule where it applies, map the site's intake and build the preceptor file. Vetting a lead is lighter work than a full search, and the quote reflects it.
