These are the broad questions Wilmington University nursing students tend to ask before they send the form: which programs we cover, how our work sits beside WilmU's faculty, where clinical hours can happen and what to do with a clinician you already know. Which WilmU programs we cover
We work with every WilmU nursing program that has a clinical or practice element. On the nurse practitioner side, that means the MSN-FNP, the two NP Graduate Certificates (family and psychiatric) and BSN to DNP in either track. On the doctoral side, it means the DNP in its Advanced Practice and Leadership concentrations, the combined certificate and DNP options, and the DNP + MBA. On the leadership side, it covers the Educator concentration's MSN 7752 mentor and the Nursing Leadership certificates, and for the RN to BSN, the community site for NUR 430.
The DNP in Nurse Anesthesiology is the exception worth knowing about. It runs with ChristianaCare, and WilmU publishes that program's own list of clinical sites, so anesthesiology students should start with the Nurse Anesthesiology guide. How our work sits beside WilmU's faculty
Our service is built to help in either situation: when WilmU's faculty are involved in your placement, and when the search is starting from you. Where faculty are already involved, we add well-matched options and a complete file. Where the search is yours to begin, we carry it from the first call to the first shift.
In both cases the decision is WilmU's. Faculty review each proposed preceptor and site, and Delaware's Board of Nursing rules put preceptor approval with faculty in APRN programs. Our part is to make that review easy: the right specialty, a valid license where the precepting happens, and every detail in one place. When faculty ask for something more, a different setting or another credential, we go back to work on it the same week.
Where your clinical hours can happen
Even in WilmU's online programs, the clinical hours are in-person work beside a preceptor, and WilmU attaches one firm condition: an RN license for the state where you train. That rule, more than any other, decides which states are open to you. Our RN license for clinicals guide covers it in full.
WilmU is an NC-SARA participant with Delaware's approval, and it counts out-of-state field work as part of its online learning, subject to each host state. A separate question is licensure: WilmU's table lists the NP programs as Not Determined Yet in a handful of states, including New York, Louisiana and Tennessee, so check your state's row on the licensure by state page before you plan.
Using a clinician you already know
A search often starts with a name: a nurse practitioner at their own clinic, a psychiatrist a colleague recommended, a doctorally prepared leader in their health system. That can be a strong start. WilmU's public pages set no rules on preceptors who are your employer, your supervisor or a relative, so put the question to your NP Program Chair before you commit.
Send us the lead and we check it against what the course needs: the right population focus, a license in the state where you would train, doctoral preparation for a DNP course, and the site's intake steps. If the lead fits, we build the file. If it falls short, you have a search already underway.
If your plans change
Life moves. You might relocate, change tracks or sit out a term. WilmU does not publish a rule for students who move mid-program, so tell your NP Program Chair early, and tell us your new city and license state so we can restart the search where you now live. A change of track changes the search too: a move between family and psychiatric mental health practice swaps GRN 7121-GRN 7124 for GRN 7221-GRN 7224, and the preceptor profile with it.
Keep WilmU's time limits in view. The MSN-FNP and the DNP each carry a five-year limit, and an MSN-FNP student away from study for over a year repeats selected courses. A pause that runs long can change your practicum sequence, and the time limits guide explains the rules.

Delaware clinicians may also want to know about 85 Del. Laws c. 438, signed in August 2026 and effective February 20, 2027. It funds grants to facilities that host uncompensated preceptorships for advanced-practice nursing students, subject to appropriation. The details are on our Delaware APRN practice page.
Questions WilmU students ask
How early should a WilmU student contact a placement service?
As soon as the practicum appears on your MyWilmU Degree Works plan. For the MSN-FNP, that means well before GRN 7121, ideally while GRN 7104 Advanced Health Assessment is still ahead of you or under way. Psychiatric mental health and DNP searches benefit most from extra lead time because the clinician pool is smaller.
Can you help if my WilmU practicum has already started?
Yes. Tell us your course, how many hours you have completed and how many remain, and when the term ends. We search for a clinician who can take you for the remaining hours. The behind on clinical hours guide covers the choices WilmU's policies leave open.
Do you help with the DNP Project itself?
Our role is the preceptor. We find a doctorally prepared experiential engagement preceptor who fits your concentration and project setting. The project itself, including its review by WilmU's Human Subjects Committee during GRN 9001, belongs to you and your DNP Project Advisor.
Can my preceptor be in Pennsylvania, Maryland or New Jersey?
It can, as long as your RN license is valid in that state; WilmU's licensure rule for clinicals follows the state, not the school. WilmU's Delaware campuses sit close to all three. We search in the state where you plan to train and check the preceptor's license there.
What do you do with the details I send?
We use them to plan and run your search: matching your course, location and schedule to clinicians who fit. A preceptor sees what they need to decide whether to take you. The privacy page explains how we handle your information.
