When the start date is close, speed comes from two things: nothing left to clear on your side, and a search aimed at clinicians who can say yes without a long intake queue. Here is how to run that search against Wilmington University's 2026-27 calendar, and how our team compresses it for you.

Pin down the date you are really working to
WilmU's year holds three 15-week semesters, and inside each one sit two 7-week blocks, each followed by a reading week. WilmU's public pages do not say whether the NP practicums run as blocks or as full semesters, so look up your section in Student Registration Self-Service or ask your course faculty. That single detail can halve or double the weeks you have to reach the course's hours.

Clear your own side before the first call
A clinician's yes is wasted if your own file is not ready. WilmU treats clinical credentialing clearance as a condition of starting clinical courses, and the College times its background check and drug screen by the program handbook. Any result that needs a closer look goes through a multi-step review, and that takes time a short runway cannot spare.

Fast routes and slow routes
Some doors are slow by design, and it pays to know which before the clock runs. TidalHealth's form has to be in 90 days or more before the start, and TidalHealth picks the provider. ChristianaCare takes nursing students only under a current affiliation agreement and has stopped adding new ones. Bayhealth waits for a preceptor's acceptance before the school coordinator's paperwork and the Clinician Nexus clearance can begin.
With weeks rather than months, weight the search toward clinicians who decide for themselves: owners and partners in independent family or psychiatric practices, clinicians in small group practices, and community clinics whose onboarding you can confirm in one call. Keep any large-system requests running in the background for the practicum after this one.
The slow way with little time: one request, a week of waiting, then the next. Contact every good fit within the same few days.
A compressed search, step by step

- Build the whole list in one sittingEvery clinician in the right focus within your driving radius, in each state where you hold an RN license. Start with APRNs, then add the other licenses Delaware's rule allows if your faculty accept them.

- Qualify the first yesConfirm an active, unencumbered license in a comparable focus, the days on offer and any onboarding the site runs before you stop searching.

If the first class day arrives before the preceptor
Tell your course faculty before the course begins, not after. The calendar sets your choices and each carries a cost: a W before the withdrawal deadline leaves your GPA untouched, while letting that date pass produces an FA, which lowers it. Keep a dated copy of every message you send in these weeks; if the start does have to move, that record makes the next conversation shorter.
Ask directly whether hours can begin partway through the course and what total the course still expects. The catalog states the direct care hours for each practicum but says nothing about how they must be spread across the weeks, so your faculty's answer is the one to plan around. How quickly can a preceptor be lined up for a WilmU practicum?
It depends on your focus, your location and how much of your own credentialing is done, so any honest answer is a range, not a date. What shortens it: clearance finished, an RN license in more than one nearby state, flexible days, and a search that approaches many clinicians at once. Tell us your first class day and we plan backward from it.
Can I start clinical hours before the WilmU course begins?
Nothing on WilmU's public pages settles whether hours may be logged before a practicum course opens, and the catalog treats clinical clearance as a condition of starting the course. Plan on hours counting inside the course dates unless your course faculty tell you otherwise in writing, and raise it early if a preceptor can only offer days before the term.
Is my own workplace a quick option?
It can be, since you already know the setting and its onboarding. WilmU's public pages set out no employer or supervisor rule for NP preceptors, so ask your Assistant Chair before you commit. The clinician still needs a comparable practice focus and an active, unencumbered license under Delaware's rule, and the days should meet the course objectives rather than repeat your usual job.
Should I register for the practicum before a preceptor is confirmed?
Registration for Spring 2027 opens October 19, 2026, and for Summer 2027 on March 1, 2027. Whether to register before a preceptor is confirmed is a question for your course faculty or your track's Assistant Chair, because it depends on how your program handles clearance and timing. Ask well before drop/add closes.
Does Clinician Nexus onboarding slow a placement down?
All three of ChristianaCare, Bayhealth and Beebe route student intake through Clinician Nexus, and every item a site asks for takes time to gather. Beebe, for example, lists a fit test and vaccines among its steps. Start the onboarding the day a site says yes and keep your CPR card, license details and health records ready to upload.
