What a WilmU practicum costs you beyond tuition
Wilmington University names a few practicum costs outright: students pay the fees for the College's background check and drug screen, and some FNP courses carry an associated fee. Others follow from the rules, such as a nursing license in whichever state hosts your clinical, travel to your site and to seminars, and the price of a term that slips. This page walks through each one without figures, with the questions that pin down your own amount.

The costs WilmU names
Only a handful of practicum costs appear on WilmU's public pages, and none comes with a published amount. Treat the table as a list of items to price, not a budget.

The insurance row is the one the University carries itself. Should a clinical site want evidence of coverage, ask your course faculty how to supply it, and leave time for that before your first day.
Credentialing fees and repeat checks
On money, the College's credentialing policy leaves no doubt: every related fee is the student's to pay. Graduate NP, Leadership and DNP students run the checks through the College's designated credentialing system, timed by the program handbook's course progression and finished ahead of any clinical experience. Refusing the checks, or leaving a finding unresolved after review, shuts the door on clinical courses, so this is a fee to pay on time.
Health systems can add a layer of their own. Beebe Healthcare's student page, for example, has NP students finish its own onboarding in Clinician Nexus, including a fit test, vaccines, a drug test, a background check and a search of Delaware's Adult and Child Protection Registry. Ask each site whether it accepts your WilmU results or wants its own, and who pays if it does. RN to BSN students should note that NUR 303 takes no previous results, so an older check will not carry over. The full process is in the background check guide.
Course fees on FNP practicums
An associated fee applies to certain FNP courses, according to WilmU's MSN-FNP curriculum page, which names neither the courses nor what the fee pays for. The same page mentions planned simulation inside the clinical hours, but WilmU does not connect the two, so avoid assuming the fee is for simulation.
Two questions pin it down. Ask the FNP Assistant Chair or the Chair of the NP programs which of GRN 7121 to GRN 7124 and the earlier lab-based courses carry a fee, and ask the Financial Aid office how course fees fit into your aid. FNP Graduate Certificate students take the same four practicums, so the question applies to them as well. The hours behind each course are on the clinical hours page.
Licenses and certifications you keep current
WilmU's NP pages set two standing conditions for clinicals: CPR certification that is current, and an RN license valid in whichever state the practicum sits in. If your practicum site is in a state where you hold no RN license, a second license, or a multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact if your home state belongs to it, becomes a practicum cost. Delaware's Board, for its part, honors multistate RN licenses issued by compact states. The details are on the RN license page.
CPR cards expire on their own schedule, so compare your renewal date with your practicum calendar and renew before it runs out. DNP Advanced Practice students carry a different set: the concentration is built for practicing APRNs holding current national board certification, so renewals of both the license and the certification fall inside your program years.
Travel and time at the site
Travel is the cost WilmU leaves most open. Per the MSN-FNP overview, students in the practicum phase come together face to face for seminars twice each year; the format line on that page nonetheless reads Online, and no location is given. Ask the NP Program Chair how they run for your cohort before you book time off, and plan for the trips until you hear otherwise. Simulation and seminars sets out the conflict.
Then there is the site itself. GRN 7121, GRN 7122 and GRN 7123 are 175 hours each and GRN 7124 is 225, roughly 22 and 28 eight-hour days before any planned simulation is counted. Every mile to the site repeats across those days, along with parking, childcare and any unpaid time away from your job. A closer site can save more over a semester than almost anything else on this page.
The cost of a term that slips
The biggest practicum cost may never appear on a bill: time. If a site falls through and a practicum slips, WilmU's rules decide what that costs you. Withdraw in time and the course shows a W with no GPA effect; miss the deadline and it becomes an FA, which lowers your GPA. An incomplete has to be finished within the window the instructor sets, 60 days after the course at most, or it turns into an F.
Longer gaps cost more. The MSN-FNP has a five-year limit, and stepping away for over a year means retaking selected courses. In the DNP, every course needs at least a B, a course may be retaken once, and no more than two courses may be repeated. A student on probation is capped at 9 credits a semester, which stretches the plan further still. Delayed graduation covers what to do when a missing preceptor moves the date.

Questions WilmU students ask
Do WilmU nursing students pay for the background check and drug screen?
Yes. Under the College's credentialing policy, every fee tied to the background check and drug screen falls to the student. Graduate NP, Leadership and DNP students complete both through the College's designated credentialing system before any clinical experience. In the RN to BSN, a one-time outside vendor charge is paid during NUR 303.
Which WilmU FNP courses have an extra fee?
The MSN-FNP curriculum page mentions an associated fee on some FNP courses but does not list them or say what the fee covers. Ask the NP Program Chair or the FNP Assistant Chair before you register, and check with the Financial Aid office on how the fee fits your aid package.
Does WilmU provide malpractice insurance for NP students?
Yes, as group coverage: the MSN-FNP curriculum page states that the University holds a group professional liability policy covering its NP students. If a clinical site wants a certificate or other proof of coverage, ask your course faculty how to obtain it, and allow time for that request before your first practicum day.
Does Delaware pay preceptors who teach NP students?
Delaware's HB 385, signed August 20, 2026 and effective February 20, 2027, sets up grants, subject to annual appropriation, for hospitals, FQHCs and other clinical facilities hosting unpaid preceptorships for advanced-practice nursing students. The money goes to facilities rather than to individual preceptors, and Delaware law has no preceptor tax credit. WilmU's public pages describe no preceptor benefits.
Are the MSN-FNP face-to-face seminars an added travel cost?
They may be. The MSN-FNP overview puts practicum students in face-to-face seminars two times a year, although the same page describes the program as Online and leaves the seminar location out. Ask the NP Program Chair how they work for your cohort before you plan travel or time away from work.
