Studying with WilmU from Alabama: Board approval, licenses and clinicals

What deserves your planning time is the clinical: Alabama's Board of Nursing wants a filing from any out-of-state advanced practice program, naming your preceptor, no later than 15 days before you begin.

Alabama on WilmU's licensure table
Seven nursing rows, seven entries of Meets Educational Licensing Requirements for Alabama. In WilmU's usage, that means the program's education fits the Alabama license it prepares you for; which Alabama clinic you may use is another matter. The page has no update date, so look again right before you apply.

The Alabama Board's filing for out-of-state programs
Board rule 610-X-3-.09 reaches advanced practice programs (and prelicensure ones) whose home is another state: 15 or more days before any Alabama clinical learning experience, the program submits a letter of intent, approval paperwork attached. The packet lists you with your license number and the supervising clinician with theirs, names the facility, and includes a statement from the site's chief nursing officer or director of nursing.
A yearly fee comes on top, billed to each out-of-state program per calendar year, and the Board's FAQ leaves no wiggle room: without approval and payment, no Alabama clinicals. WilmU, an NC-SARA participant with Delaware's approval, has promised to respect every state's rules for field work beyond Delaware (see the NC-SARA guide), so ask the Online Learning office how far in advance it needs your preceptor's name.
Alabama's filing carries your preceptor's name and license number. A yes that arrives days before the term can come too late.
Reduced practice and who can precept
In the American Association of Nurse Practitioners' map, Alabama is reduced practice. Alabama NPs practice with a physician collaborator, on terms the state regulates, and two licensing bodies share authority over them, Alabama's nursing board and its Board of Medical Examiners. So any NP you approach has a physician partner.
Both can qualify under the Delaware Board's preceptor standard for APRN programs, which turns on the license: APRN, physician, PA or pharmacist, active and unencumbered, issued by Alabama for an Alabama site, matched to your focus. A state income tax credit exists for Alabama preceptors who teach without pay in medically underserved rural communities (the Preceptor Tax Incentive Program), but it counts only rotations serving schools physically located in Alabama, which leaves a WilmU rotation out.
Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery
Metro Birmingham, home to roughly 1.2 million people, is the state's biggest; Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery come next. Match them to systems and you get UAB Medicine for Birmingham, Huntsville Hospital Health System, two Mobile names, Infirmary Health plus the University of South Alabama's USA Health, then Baptist Health for Montgomery. Consider them landmarks, not commitments to WilmU students; every system runs its own student intake.
Your RN license for Alabama clinicals
Alabama's multistate era began January 1, 2020, the day its Nurse Licensure Compact membership took effect. Post-licensure students (the Board's FAQ names RN to BSN, MSN and DNP) who train in Alabama carry either a clean, valid Alabama RN license or a multistate one from a party state. WilmU asks for the equivalent from its side, with current CPR: RN licensure in whichever state hosts the clinical. Edge cases are in the RN license guide.
Alabama has no APRN Compact law, so your post-graduation APRN license comes through Alabama alone.

Questions WilmU students ask
Is WilmU's online MSN-FNP workable from Alabama?
On licensure, yes: Alabama shows Meets for the MSN-FNP on WilmU's table, and equally for BSN to DNP, the DNP and the FNP and PMHNP Graduate Certificates. Alabama clinicals are a second question, resting on the Board's approval of WilmU as an out-of-state program and on your Alabama or multistate RN license. WilmU's Online Learning office can confirm both.
Does precepting me earn an Alabama preceptor tax credit?
No. Alabama's incentive counts rotations only when they serve programs physically located in Alabama, and WilmU's home is New Castle, Delaware. The Alabama Department of Revenue lists the credit for in-state programs from tax year 2024 until September 29, 2031.
How far ahead does Alabama's Board need my clinical details?
Fifteen days before clinical learning experiences begin is the minimum in rule 610-X-3-.09. WilmU has not published an Alabama lead time of its own, so ask your track's Assistant Chair, or the NP Program Chair, when they want the preceptor and facility named.
I live in Georgia but want a practicum site in Alabama. Does my license work?
Georgia issues multistate licenses, and the Alabama Board accepts a compact home state's multistate license for post-licensure students. Your site still counts as an Alabama clinical, so the out-of-state program filing applies regardless. For rules on your home side of the line, read the Georgia guide.
