Indiana and Wilmington University: compact licensing, split metros and NP preceptors

Wilmington University's licensure table gives every WilmU nursing program a Meets for Indiana. Three things set the state apart for a WilmU student: its Board leaves post-licensure and graduate nursing education unreviewed, compact licenses have worked there since mid-2020, and parts of Indiana belong to the Chicago and Louisville metros.

A Board that stays out of graduate education

The Indiana State Board of Nursing, an arm of the Professional Licensing Agency, accredits the Indiana programs that train people toward an initial RN or LPN license. Its nursing education page is blunt about everything past that point: from RN to BSN completion up through master's and doctoral nursing, the Board neither reviews nor accredits. Rule 848 IAC 1-2-4, which lists eligible programs, reaches no further than RN and PN education before licensure.

So a WilmU MSN-FNP or DNP student training in Indianapolis meets no Board approval step that the Board's own pages describe. What remains is WilmU's promise to honor each state's rules for field experiences beyond Delaware, which Online Learning can speak to, and whatever agreement a health system wants with WilmU; our affiliation agreements page explains those.

Collaborative agreements and who can precept

In AANP's grading Indiana is reduced practice, because each Indiana NP has a state-regulated collaboration agreement with a physician that touches some part of practice. That puts physicians in the frame alongside NPs, and Delaware's preceptor rule for APRN programs welcomes both, with PAs and pharmacists, when the practice focus is comparable.

Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and two shared metros

Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood, near 2.21 million people in 2025 Census Bureau figures, anchors the state, and Fort Wayne follows. Around 729,000 people in metro Chicago are Indiana residents, as are some 281,000 in metro Louisville. Ascension St. Vincent, Franciscan Health, IU Health, Parkview Health and Community Health Network are systems NP students look at, each with its own intake.

Those split metros change the license question. A Chicago-side clinic needs an Illinois license, because Illinois stays out of the compact, and Illinois has its own rule for schools from other states; see the Illinois guide. Licensing for Indiana clinicals

Current CPR and a registered nurse license valid where the practicum sits: that is WilmU's condition before any NP clinical. Since July 1, 2020, a multistate license issued by Delaware or another compact state has covered Indiana patients. The APRN Compact has not passed in Indiana and is not yet operating, so an NP license after graduation is an Indiana application. The license rule page goes further.

Questions WilmU students ask

Does WilmU's online program need Indiana Board approval before I enroll?

The Board's own education page says it reviews and accredits neither RN to BSN nor graduate nursing programs, and its program rules cover pre-licensure education in Indiana. Enrollment and state authorization questions still belong with WilmU, so talk to the Online Learning office before you apply.

Can I live in Northwest Indiana and train in Chicago?

Yes, provided you hold an Illinois RN license, because an Indiana or Delaware multistate license does not cross into Illinois. Illinois also lists documents a school from another state files before clinical placement there, so confirm both points with WilmU before committing to a Chicago site.

Why do Indiana NP preceptors mention a collaborating physician?

Indiana ties NP practice to a physician collaborator through a regulated agreement, which is why AANP grades it reduced practice. The physician is part of the practice you train in, and one in a comparable focus can also serve as a preceptor under Delaware's rule for APRN programs.

Does WilmU's PMHNP certificate meet Indiana requirements?

WilmU's table says so: the post-master's PMHNP reads Meets Educational Licensing Requirements for Indiana, like the other six WilmU nursing programs. Talk to the Assistant Chair for the PMHNP program before planning GRN 7221 clinicals in Indiana.
