Kansas and Wilmington University: KSBN's approach to online APRN students
Wilmington University marks every WilmU nursing program Meets for Kansas. Kansans can start a distance APRN program based elsewhere, WilmU's included, without the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN) signing off first. KSBN looks at the program once a graduate asks Kansas for an APRN license, and in between it is specific about who should precept.

Kansas on WilmU's licensure table
Kansas draws the status Meets Educational Licensing Requirements for every one of the seven nursing programs WilmU lists. The status is a licensure finding with no update date attached, and it does not govern where a practicum happens.

What KSBN checks when a WilmU graduate applies
KSBN's paper on out-of-state APRN programs moves the review to the end: the Board weighs a program only once someone who finished it seeks Kansas APRN licensure. What it looks for:
- At least 3 credit hours apiece in the three advanced courses: pathophysiology, health assessment and pharmacology
- A program total of 45 credit hours or more
- National accreditation
- Role-specialty clinical hours, with the bar keyed to your admission date: 750 when admission came after March 1, 2025, and 500 when it came earlier
WilmU's MSN-FNP lists 55 credits and 750 clinical hours that fold in planned simulation, and CCNE accredits WilmU at the baccalaureate, master's and DNP levels, post-graduate APRN certificates included. Preceptors and faculty for Kansas APRN clinicals
The same KSBN paper, citing K.A.R. 60-17-104, says an APRN student's Kansas preceptor gets an orientation, signs an agreement and holds Kansas APRN licensure matching the role the student is learning; clinical supervision of APRN students calls for that Kansas APRN license. For WilmU's FNP courses that points to Kansas family NPs, and for the PMHNP courses to Kansas psychiatric NPs.
That is narrower than Delaware's list for APRN program preceptors, which also admits physicians, PAs and pharmacists practicing in a comparable focus; how WilmU squares the two is a question for the NP Program Chair. Faculty requirements are modest in Kansas. An online instructor needs no Kansas license, site visits are optional under Kansas rules, and any instructor who drops in does so as a guest rather than a clinician. AANP rates Kansas full practice.

About 938,000 people live in the Kansas portion of metro Kansas City, going by 2025 Census Bureau estimates, with Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan next. The University of Kansas Health System, Ascension Via Christi, Stormont Vail Health and Wesley Healthcare (Wichita) are systems NP students consider, and each runs student intake its own way. The RN license you train on
KSBN treats an APRN student at a Kansas site as practicing on an RN license Kansas accepts, Kansas-issued or multistate, with the student status itself coming from K.S.A. 65-1124. That matches WilmU's own rule tying the license to the state where the clinical happens. Kansas has recognized compact licenses since July 1, 2019, so a Delaware multistate license qualifies. Does KSBN approve WilmU's online FNP program before I enroll from Kansas?
No formal Board approval comes first. KSBN waits to review a distance APRN program based in another state until someone who completed it applies in Kansas. Enrollment is WilmU's business, though, so raise it with the NP Program Chair and WilmU's Online Learning staff ahead of applying.
Can a physician precept a WilmU student in Kansas?
KSBN's guidance points APRN students toward Kansas-licensed APRNs whose role matches the student's track. Delaware's rule is broader and includes physicians, so a Kansas physician preceptor needs a clear answer from the NP Program Chair before any agreement is signed.
Will WilmU faculty visit my Kansas clinical site?
Site visits are not something WilmU's public pages cover. From Kansas's side, no visit is mandatory, an instructor who drops in comes as a guest, and teaching online requires no Kansas license. Ask your course faculty how WilmU plans to follow your practicum.
What if I move to Kansas partway through my WilmU program?
WilmU's pages set out no policy for a student who changes states during the program, so tell the NP Program Chair and your track's Assistant Chair ahead of the move. A multistate license keeps working after a move between two compact states such as Missouri and Kansas, but every new site and preceptor still goes to WilmU faculty.
