Michigan and Wilmington University: a Michigan license, restricted practice and big systems
WilmU's State Licensures by Program table gives Michigan a Meets for all seven Wilmington University nursing programs. What slows a Michigan plan is paperwork, not program status: Michigan has yet to join the compact, so your first practicum there waits on a Michigan RN license, and Michigan NPs need a physician's delegation for controlled substances.

Each WilmU nursing program reads Meets Educational Licensing Requirements for Michigan. The statuses speak to whether the education can lead to a Michigan license, not to whether or where a practicum may run, and WilmU's page never says when it was last refreshed.

Getting a Michigan RN license before clinicals
WilmU's rule is simple to state: before a clinical experience, hold RN licensure for the state it happens in. For Michigan that rules out leaning on a Delaware multistate card. A compact bill, HB 4246, is pending in Lansing; until it passes and takes effect, apply to the Michigan Board of Nursing through LARA, the state licensing agency.
Michigan's RN application asks for
- A criminal history check
- One-time instruction in recognizing victims of human trafficking
- Two hours of implicit bias training, dated within five years of the license
Start early enough that the license is in hand before GRN 7121 or GRN 7221; the RN license for clinicals page covers WilmU's side. Michigan has not adopted the APRN Compact.
Restricted practice and vetting an NP preceptor
AANP ranks Michigan restricted practice because an NP there needs a physician's delegation to prescribe controlled substances. For a WilmU student, Michigan NPs and physicians in a comparable focus both fit Delaware's rule for APRN program preceptors.
A Michigan NP's specialty certification rests on a pair of credentials: the Michigan RN license, kept current, and a national certification from one of the certifying bodies Michigan's Board accepts. We verify the pair for every Michigan NP we propose, matched to family practice for FNP students or psychiatric practice for PMHNP students, before the name reaches your faculty.
How Michigan treats programs from other states
Michigan's program rules, the series that begins at R 338.10301, and its Board's education page deal with programs located inside Michigan. Neither sets out a filing for a Delaware school whose students train in Michigan clinics. When graduates apply for licensure, Michigan credits out-of-state programs through their ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation; WilmU's master's, DNP and post-graduate APRN certificate programs carry CCNE's, detailed on our accreditation page. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint
Metro Detroit, formally Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, held about 4.39 million people by the Census Bureau's reckoning for 2025, nearly four times Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, with Lansing-East Lansing and Flint smaller still. NP students there weigh Trinity Health Michigan, University of Michigan Health (Michigan Medicine), McLaren Health Care, Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health; every one sets its own student terms.
State money for preceptors is thin. The preceptor pilot from the MDHHS nursing office, run with one Michigan university, is over and only ever paid that school's NP preceptors.

Will my Delaware compact license cover a Michigan practicum?
Not today. Michigan's compact bill, HB 4246, is pending, and until Michigan implements the compact, WilmU's condition of RN licensure where the clinical happens points to a Michigan-issued license for any practicum in the state.
What credentials should a Michigan NP preceptor show?
Two, together: Michigan NP specialty certification plus an up-to-date Michigan RN license, and Michigan grants that certification only to nurses holding national certification from a body its Board recognizes. The practice focus should match your WilmU course. WilmU faculty decide on the preceptor, and the program handbook covers anything WilmU adds.
Do Michigan preceptors get anything from the state for teaching WilmU students?
Not at present. The only recent state incentive, a pilot through the MDHHS Office of Nursing Programs, has closed, and it was limited to preceptors of one in-state university's NP students, so a clinician teaching a WilmU student has no state program to claim.
Does WilmU's DNP meet Michigan licensing requirements?
WilmU's table marks both the DNP and the BSN to DNP Meets Educational Licensing Requirements for Michigan. The DNP's experiential engagement preceptor is doctorally prepared, so a Michigan search for GRN 9001 looks different from an FNP search; our DNP preceptor page explains.
