Montana and Wilmington University: Board approval, compact licensing and long distances
Montana gets a Meets for every WilmU nursing program on Wilmington University's licensure table. The state's Board lets graduate and RN to BSN students from other states train in Montana without program approval, provided their license is valid in Montana, and compact licenses qualify. What makes Montana hard is geography: small metros, far apart.

Montana's statuses on WilmU's table
All seven WilmU nursing programs share one Montana status. It is a licensure judgment, whether the program's education can take you to a Montana license, published without an update date and separate from any rule about practicum locations.

Two tracks at Montana's Board
Montana guards its pre-licensure clinical slots closely. ARM 24.159.608 makes a visiting pre-licensure school ask the Board, or its executive director, for permission, and the ask is a packet: the director's signed letter; proof of board approval and national accreditation; names and credentials for preceptors and faculty; a faculty supervision plan; a letter from in-state program directors saying their own students lose nothing; and the facility agreement.
WilmU's programs sit on the other track. The Board's FAQ takes post-licensure education, graduate and RN to BSN alike, off that path for Montana clinicals; the school's job is to be sure the student's active license is good in Montana, because Montana patients are on the receiving end. Faculty licensing follows hands-on care: an instructor from elsewhere who treats Montana patients holds a Montana license, while a Delaware-based instructor advising you and your preceptor from a distance needs none.
Licensing for a Montana practicum
WilmU wants a registered nurse license for the practicum's state, and Montana's FAQ points the same way. Montana's compact start date was January 19, 2018. Its RN licensing page adds that nurses working on another compact state's multistate privilege need no Montana license on top, which makes a Delaware multistate license enough. No APRN Compact statute exists in Montana, which leaves NP licensure after WilmU as its own Montana application. More on the rule: RN license for clinicals.
Full practice and Montana's health systems
Montana gives NPs full practice in AANP's scoring, and Montana NPs in family and psychiatric care are natural preceptors for WilmU's NP courses. The largest names a Montana NP student meets are Benefis Health System; Providence Montana (Providence St. Patrick Hospital, Missoula); Intermountain Health, whose Montana hospital, St. Vincent Regional, is in Billings; and Billings Clinic, now combined with Logan Health. Each keeps its own process for students.
Montana's metros are small by any measure. Billings, the largest, had near 194,000 people when the Census Bureau estimated 2025; Bozeman, Missoula and Helena are smaller. Driving between them eats hours, so a Montana search starts with clinicians nearest your home.

Does Montana's Board of Nursing need to approve WilmU before my clinicals?
No, going by the Board's FAQ, which carves post-licensure programs, WilmU's graduate tracks and RN to BSN among them, out of Montana's approval process. The heavier ARM 24.159.608 procedure, no-displacement check and all, targets pre-licensure schools. WilmU commits to following each state's field experience rules, so Online Learning can confirm the details for your site.
Will my WilmU faculty need a Montana license?
Only a faculty member treating Montana patients directly would, per the Board's FAQ; consulting with you and your preceptor from Delaware requires no Montana license. WilmU's public pages do not describe site visits, so raise practicum check-ins with your course faculty.
Can I use my Delaware multistate license in Montana?
Yes. Montana is in the compact, and its RN licensing page treats another compact state's multistate privilege as sufficient on its own. A license limited to one state outside the compact is different; it would mean getting a Montana license before clinicals begin.
Does WilmU's DNP suit a Montana nurse leader?
WilmU's table marks the DNP Meets for Montana. Leadership students complete GRN 8121 to GRN 8124 with a doctorally prepared experiential engagement preceptor, and the DNP Project is most often done in the student's own workplace, which suits a Montana leader who wants to stay put.
