What WilmU's table says about Rhode Island

Rhode Island's rules for visiting programs
Nursing education in Rhode Island runs under 216-RICR-40-05-3, the rule the state's nursing board applies. Its approval sections deal with basic nursing programs based in Rhode Island, and the rule sets out no separate approval process for a graduate program from Delaware sending an NP student to a Providence practice. WilmU's commitment to follow each state's rules for field experiences still applies, so the Online Learning office is the place to confirm nothing further is needed.
One provision matters before your first call to a site. Programs the state approves must show, in their clinical agency agreements, active use of a central registry Rhode Island keeps for clinical placements. The rule is silent on whether visiting programs join it. Should a hospital or clinic there mention the registry or its own affiliation agreement, pass the question to WilmU rather than guessing.

Full practice and who precepts
AANP's practice map puts Rhode Island in full practice, the category where NPs evaluate, diagnose and treat under the nursing regulator's authority alone. For a WilmU student, that widens the pool: an NP-owned family practice in Warwick or a psychiatric NP's own office can both be serious candidates.
The standard WilmU students carry into any state comes from the Delaware Board, which lets a nurse practitioner, physician, PA or pharmacist precept if the license is active, carries no encumbrance and matches the course's practice focus. Where NP students look in Rhode Island
Start a list with South County Health, add CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island, then Care New England Health System and Brown University Health. Each has its own route for students, so start with that system's pages.
Rhode Island's metro picture is simple. Census figures for 2025 put about 1.11 million Rhode Islanders in Providence-Warwick, with the rest of that metro reaching into Massachusetts. Short distances make the state easy to cover, but a practice a few minutes over the Massachusetts line puts your clinical in another licensing state.

Does Rhode Island require WilmU to get approval before my NP clinicals?
The state's education rule concerns its own basic programs and describes no approval route for a graduate program based elsewhere. WilmU commits to follow each state's rules for field experiences, so confirm with its Online Learning office that nothing more applies to your site.
Why might a Rhode Island clinic ask about a placement registry?
Rhode Island's regulation requires its approved nursing programs to show active participation in a statewide clinical placement registry in their agreements with clinical agencies. The rule does not say whether visiting programs take part, so if a Rhode Island site mentions it, ask WilmU how it applies.
Is Rhode Island a compact state for nurses again?
Yes, from January 1, 2024. The Department of Health's compact page says licenses granted to qualified residents since then carry multistate privileges. WilmU still wants an RN license that reaches the state of each clinical, so confirm with WilmU that your license reaches Rhode Island.
Can an NP who owns a practice precept my WilmU course in Rhode Island?
Full practice status means NP-owned practices in Rhode Island run without a physician agreement. Delaware's rule for APRN program preceptors includes NPs whose licenses are in good standing and whose focus fits the course, and WilmU faculty sign off on each preceptor and site.
