All seven Wilmington University nursing programs carry a Meets for South Dakota on WilmU's State Licensures by Program table. South Dakota's Board steps back from approving schools based in other states, treats a clinical arrangement as WilmU's business with whichever South Dakota practice hosts you, and shares something unusual with WilmU's home state: Delaware and South Dakota have each enacted the APRN Compact.

WilmU's State Licensures by Program page puts Meets Educational Licensing Requirements beside South Dakota for every nursing program it lists. The status reflects WilmU's reading of licensure, that each program's education fits the South Dakota license it aims at. Clinical placement is outside its scope, and the page is undated.

How South Dakota treats schools from elsewhere
The Board's guidance sheet for nursing programs outside the state is blunt: approval of those programs is simply not something South Dakota does. Under that guidance, a WilmU practicum at a South Dakota clinic or bedside rests on an agreement between the program and the host clinician or agency, the kind of contractual agreement WilmU's credentialing policy mentions; our affiliation agreements page explains why health systems ask for one.
One faculty expectation remains. What South Dakota does want from WilmU is one faculty member holding South Dakota practice rights, a license or privilege to practice, matched to the student's level; for WilmU NP and PMHNP students that is APRN-level standing. Its distance-education rule echoes this for anyone teaching APRN students located in South Dakota. That belongs to WilmU, so put it to the NP Program Chair.
Preceptor standards that mirror Delaware's
For programs it approves, South Dakota wants each preceptor licensed at the student's intended level or above, and an APRN preceptor whose role, focus or specialty matches the student's field. WilmU's home state lands in the same place: Delaware's Board accepts a physician, PA, pharmacist or APRN as preceptor when the practice focus is comparable. A Sioux Falls family NP precepting GRN 7122, or a Rapid City psychiatric NP for GRN 7222, satisfies both.
On AANP's map South Dakota is full practice, reached after a new NP's first 1,040 hours, spent under a written collaborative agreement partnered with a physician, certified NP or certified nurse midwife.
Where South Dakota NP students look
Sioux Falls is the state's largest metro, around 315,000 people in 2025 Census estimates with about 305,000 of them in South Dakota and the rest in Minnesota. Rapid City follows at near 157,000, and the Aberdeen micropolitan area holds roughly 42,000.
Three systems dominate what NP students research here: Sanford Health, Avera Health and Monument Health. Beyond them, small-town clinics and community practices across the state are worth adding, since a preceptor near home often matters more than a big name when the drive to a metro is long.
Licensing, hours and both compacts
South Dakota APRN licensure calls for graduate APRN education carrying at least 500 hours of clinical practice in the student's role and population, with graduate coursework in pathophysiology, pharmacology and health and physical assessment. WilmU's FNP and PMHNP tracks each list 750 clinical hours, with FNP hours including planned simulation; our clinical hours guide breaks them down.
Multistate RN licensing began in South Dakota on January 19, 2018. In February 2024 (the 5th) it also became one of the five APRN Compact states, alongside Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota and WilmU's own Delaware, though that compact waits for seven states before it operates. For each clinical, WilmU asks for current CPR and RN licensure reaching the state where you train.

Does South Dakota approve out-of-state NP programs like WilmU's?
It approves none. South Dakota's Board leaves the arrangement to WilmU and your South Dakota host. Its one expectation of the school, when APRN students train there, is a WilmU faculty member with South Dakota APRN practice rights, by license or privilege.
Do WilmU's 750 clinical hours satisfy South Dakota's APRN requirement?
South Dakota's minimum is 500 clinical hours in the APRN role and population, alongside graduate pathophysiology, health assessment and pharmacology. WilmU's FNP and PMHNP tracks list 750 hours, FNP hours including planned simulation. Ask the South Dakota Board how it counts simulation before you apply for licensure.
Which states share the APRN Compact with South Dakota?
Delaware, WilmU's home state, is one; North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming are the others. South Dakota signed it into law on February 5, 2024. The compact only takes effect once seven states have enacted it, so APRN licensure still runs state by state for now.
Who can precept a WilmU NP student in Sioux Falls?
South Dakota's rule looks for a license no lower than the student's target level and, for APRN preceptors, a matching role or specialty. Delaware's Board adds PAs, pharmacists and physicians with a comparable focus. WilmU faculty make the final call on each preceptor.
