Iowa clinicals for Wilmington University students: ARNP rules, licensing and metros
On Wilmington University's State Licensures by Program table, all seven WilmU nursing programs read Meets for Iowa. Iowa has no approval process for WilmU or any school outside its borders, only a list of conditions running from clinical contracts to the licenses of whoever teaches or precepts in Iowa. Iowa grants full practice, belongs to the compact and calls its nurse practitioners ARNPs.

Iowa's checklist for nursing programs from other states
Iowa's nursing board sits inside DIAL, the state licensing department, and it grants no approval to a school headquartered elsewhere. A page written for such schools lists what Iowa expects of them anyway:
- Clearance to operate in the state, sought through the college aid bureau
- Compliance with Iowa statutes as well as home-state regulations
- Data for the Board whenever it requests some
- Faculty and preceptors on Iowa soil licensed in Iowa or through a multistate license
- Written clinical contracts naming who does what, leaving faculty in charge of learning, reviewed every year, with terms for termination

ARNP preceptorships under Iowa's rules
AANP rates Iowa full practice. For ARNP programs, rule 481 IAC 616.16 wants the larger share of a student's preceptorship spent with a clinician in the student's own role and population focus, meaning an ARNP or a physician. It also ties each preceptor's license to the state where that preceptor practices and puts written preceptorship agreements on a yearly review cycle. Approval of an Iowa preceptor, the Board notes, belongs jointly to the school and the facility.
Iowa gives preceptors a tangible return, too. Sixty or more hours precepting a nursing student inside an organized preceptorship turns into 6 contact hours for license renewal, backed by the supervising institution's documentation.
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the river metro
Des Moines-West Des Moines is Iowa's biggest metro, a little under 760,000 residents when the Census Bureau estimated 2025. Cedar Rapids ranks next, then Iowa City and Davenport's Iowa side. Among systems, NP students weigh UnityPoint Health; University of Iowa Health Care, the academic one; and MercyOne, plus independent family and behavioral health practices, each with its own route for students.

Your license for Iowa clinicals
WilmU ties every clinical experience to RN licensure in the state that hosts it, and Iowa lands in the same place: nurses in post-licensure programs who train there carry a current Iowa or multistate license and follow Iowa Code. The student exemption in chapter 152 helps only people with no nursing license at all; a licensed RN from Delaware, or any other state, gets nothing from it.
January 19, 2018 marked Iowa's entry into the compact; since then a Delaware multistate license has worked at an Iowa bedside. The APRN Compact has not passed in Iowa. More on WilmU's rule: RN license for clinicals.

Questions WilmU students ask
Do preceptors in Iowa have to be ARNPs?
Not all of them. Iowa's rule steers most preceptorship time to clinicians in the student's own role and population focus, ARNPs or physicians. Delaware's rule for APRN program preceptors also names PAs and pharmacists in a comparable focus, so ask the NP Program Chair how WilmU applies both.
Is there a benefit for an Iowa nurse who precepts me?
Continuing education. Iowa turns 60 or more hours of precepting in an organized preceptorship into 6 contact hours toward nurse license renewal, documented by the supervising institution. WilmU's pages do not describe preceptor benefits of their own, so route paperwork questions to the NP Program Chair.
Does WilmU need approval from Iowa College Aid?
Clearance to operate from Iowa's college aid bureau is the first item on the Board's list for schools based in other states. How WilmU handles that, NC-SARA participation included, is something its Online Learning office can confirm before you commit to an Iowa site.
What does the ARNP title mean for my WilmU search?
Iowa's advanced practice nurses hold the ARNP credential, so an Iowa family or psychiatric NP will show an ARNP license rather than one labeled APRN. For a WilmU FNP or PMHNP student, an ARNP in the matching population focus is the most natural preceptor under Iowa's preceptorship rule.
